ALDI Fairfield- inside Fairfield Forum-was a very exciting project for Streetbuild as it was the first ALDI store that we have completed with the “Fresh New Look”. We had been itching to get our hands on one for a little while!
The previous tenancy was two retail stores – one being a Discount Store and the other being a Chinese Grocer. The large combined space was passed over to us from the base builders who had to completely strip out this area to a bare shell. However, in doing this, it exposed some pretty serious problems with the sub-floor. There was substantial movement under the slabs which was causing tiles to pop, and moving forward, would have caused a whole raft of serious issues structurally. Some plumbing problems with the sewer mains and stormwater drain (which service the entire shopping centre) also came to light once we started the slab work.
Two weeks into the build, several design changes were made to the mechanical scope. It was originally decided to keep the existing air conditioning, however, ALDI had very little confidence with the original system and decided to have it upgraded which will of course provide a longer lasting, reliable system for this store.
After what was a less than smooth start to this build, this project was still delivered in exactly 9 weeks, and was ready for the Grand Opening in September 2016. Of course, due to the nature of the unexpected slab, plumbing and mechanical issues, the $1.036M figure to build this ALDI, was changed to $1.2M.
Peter Cornege, Streetbuild’s Project Manager for ALDI Fairfield, says, “The Grand Opening Day was huge! Upon entering this new ALDI store, it immediately gives an upmarket, yet calm feel. It looks very spacious, open and modern. The customers were very happy and were lining up for quite a while before the doors opened and were very keen to land themselves some good Grand Open Day specials. The staff are also very pleased with the store, especially with their staff room area. The feature wall, pendant lights and trendy furniture make it a space where staff actually want to take their break”.
With the new vinyl tiles that give the impression of polished concrete, black feature wall, cement panel walls, pressed metal grid ceiling, and low hanging pendant lights, this store certainly does look vastly different to the original ALDI store fit-outs. The design team at ALDI seem to have really nailed this new look!
Mr Brendan Smith, The Property Director from ALDI Prestons was also in attendance and says, “I'm very happy with the result and the work of Streetbuild in getting it to this point. Thanks to the Streetbuild team for your efforts on this store. It's been a great project and although we encountered the usual array of problems that just seem to pop up, I must say it’s been one of the smoothest projects I've done”.
